HCC’s roots are in Northern California.
HCC is an expansion of a program that originated in the 1970s and has been operated by HCC founders since 1990. HCC Founders were interns in the initial program, from which HCC was founded. It was a life and career-changing experience for them and since that time they have been committed to providing others with similar opportunities.
Geographically, the HCC Northern California Region includes the Greater East Bay, Contra Costa, Solano, the Sacramento area up to the El Dorado Hills, Marin, San Francisco, the Peninsula, San Jose, and the Greater South Bay, Santa Cruz, and Salinas.
HCC paid internships are available at all types and sizes of health organizations including hospitals and health systems, community health centers, medical groups, academic medical centers, HMOs and health plans, community-based organizations, public health departments, and advocacy groups.
HCC interns come from all universities and colleges in the region, including campuses of the University of California, California State University, and private institutions. Some of our applicants come from California community colleges as well. Our Northern California Program also includes a large number of interns from northern California who attend college in other parts of the state or country and students from other regions who want to be in northern California for the summer.
HCC partners with the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. This partnership, along with others we have throughout our regions, allows us to tap into highly qualified and experienced faculty, students, and alumni. Interns participate in workshops and get to interact with faculty, staff, and students who can provide invaluable knowledge, insights, and connections about how students can find the graduate programs that suit them and how they can be competitive applicants. Over the past 8 years, over 7 HCC alumni per year have been admitted to the School of Public Health.
