Health Information Technology Internships

One of the most important and exciting developments in our country is the goal of implementing electronic health records and other health information technology tools to improve the health outcomes, quality and cost. California has a major state-wide initiative to achieve Health IT implementation and meaningful use in over 90% of health providers in the next 5 years. To accomplish this we need over 10,000 additional Health IT workers in a wide range of roles. Health IT offers well paying job and career opportunities in a growing, dynamic field where you can make an important difference in health organizations and communities. Health IT jobs can also provide experience that can lead to or enhance careers in clinical, administrative or public health fields.

Health Career Connection is partnering with the California Health Workforce Alliance, the California Health and Human Services Agency’s Health Workforce Workgroup and Health employers to help build the HIT workforce California needs and to provide opportunities for interested candidates to launch their HIT careers. The first step is to provide paid HIT internships in leading health organizations throughout California.

Internships are a great opportunity to be exposed to HIT jobs, gain hands-on practical experience and demonstrate practical skills that complement coursework to potential employers. For employers, internships are helpful in fulfilling a short-term project and an invaluable way to see if there is a fit between a trainee and the job. Health Career Connection offers an easy and cost-effective internship placement service for health information technology. Through an apprenticeship model, HIT internships offer the opportunity to learn under experienced mentors and by doing the work as part of a team leading health IT implementation.

HCC and its employer partners offer paid full-time and part-time internships in health organizations and Health IT providers. The first set of internships will begin in July, 2010. For more information or to apply, please click here.

Healthcare organizations have an increasing need for talented, diverse professionals and future leaders. Through our effective outreach and internship programs HCC has a proven track record of placing capable interns in healthcare organizations and supporting them to achieve their health career goals.

Over the past twenty years, HCC interns have been hired by their host organizations upon completion of their internship or education and have gone on to successful careers in public health, medicine or clinical programs such as nursing.

Your support of HCC can help address your organization’s need for talent and contribute to our industry’s workplace challenges. Our internships have proven to be phenomenally rewarding experiences for both students and preceptors.

By adding value to the lives of young people interested in healthcare you will be setting in motion a human resources campaign that no amount of money could buy. Our experience demonstrates that each successful intern will typically influence numerous other talented students to begin seriously considering healthcare as a strong and rewarding career option.

Although a few California community colleges, universities, and others already have health IT training programs, more are expected to be available starting this year to meet this need. Many of these programs will require internships.
